Today we went to the Folke Peterson wildlife sanctuary. It is one of those places where they take injured birds and animals and rehabilitate them for either release back into the wild or, if they cannot be released, they are used for educational training in schools and zoos.
This used to be funded 100% by local taxes, but as a result of budget cuts they now do tours and have other events open to the public to raise awareness and funds.
I must say, it was somewhat interesting to see what goes on and is involved in rehab-ing animals. One owl they had was hit by a semi just south of Orlando and stuck to the grill all the way to the port of Palm Beach. He will never be released, but makes the rounds at local elementaries.
Lot of stuff like that.
